You convinced me ;-)

Only that `tooltip-show' displays the text in `tooltip' face, spoiling
everything.  However, `x-show-tip' works fine and is much much cheaper
than the tribulations of `eldoc-display-message-no-interference-p' and
`eldoc-pre-command-refresh-echo-area'.
