There seems to be some amount of confusion here. Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta_keysays that the Meta key is emulated on modern keyboards by either the Alt or Windows keys. The statement was written by "Cate" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Cate) and has been there since 2005.
The Emacs manual says, "We refer to <Alt> as <Meta> for historical reasons" (Section 2.) Is Emacs imagining a strict connection between <Alt> and <Meta> which doesn't actually exist?
