OK.  I'll use this as one possible guideline.

I'll see what I can do in this regard.  Since, in the worst case, the
user can always override the application, I shall try to make this more
application-friendly than intended.  Maybe I also add a compatibility
option the user can set - something like "if this is non-nil, the value
of an obsolete buffer display variable is respected if it's different
from the default." - and make it by default non-nil for the time being.
