    Anyways, this seems like a lot of trouble (and would complicate the task
    of distro packagers) for a minor feature. More generally, this whole
    thread screams "overengineering" IMO.

It certainly is -- the simple solution is for sendmail to fail if it
cannot really send mail anywhere, but that simple solution is not

But this is better than the alternative that is proposed, which is
to require every user to understand something about how to mail should
be sent on that machine.
