    You laugh, but I saw this pretty frequently when I last looked;
    root's mbox was filled with errors, bounces, and bug reports.

I think we need to understand more about how that failure occurred.
How did those messages get into root's inbox?

Was there no MTA installed?

Was an MTA installed and not configured?
Was an MTA installed and configured wrong?
If so, which MTA was it?

If this was due to an MTA installed and not configured, we need to be
concerned about it, but we should also ask whether the distro in
question has fixed its problem since.

if it was due to an error in configuration, I think that was
the sysadmin's fault, so it isn't our responsibility to make
things work despite his mistake.
