You might also find M-x re-builder RET to be helpful.
For added fun, type `C-h m' inside the re-builder buffer, but play with the
builder first.
There are a few tricks that you just have to learn, with `C-q C-j' among the
biggest. This is such an old artifact of `unix versus dos versus mac' that
most hackers are inured at this point. (How old? It can accurately be
described as a `Multics versus TOPS-10 versus BBC Micro' problem.)
