The word "cloud", in the context of computing, can't help but stand
for "cloud computing".  That was surely the reason for choosing that
word, because otherwise it would make no sense here.

Why does the name gnus-cloud.el seem more appropriate than
gnus-rain.el or gnus-snow.el?  Than gnus-tent.el or gnus-shirt.el?
Than gnus-shrimp.el or gnus-leaf.el?  The only reason "cloud"
could make sense here is if it refers to "the cloud".

What a droll straw man.

                                                              We should
  > not be afraid of using "cloud" as a word.

The point is to avoid supporting a line of thinking that we campaign
against.

                                               Doing so makes us look
  > ridiculous at best.

It is better to risk looking ridiculous than to sheepishly follow the
crowd and spread the ideas we criticize.
