I'm finding that weird and annoying, can it be turned off?  It sometimes
happens by accident.

If it was on by default, I'd probably disable `delete-selection-mode'.
I rather have something typed than a selection replaced by accident, and
accident would be the only case in which the selection would be
replaced.

How does it get in the way when editing code?  Just don't replace the
selection, or disable the mode?
