Thanks for mentioning these variables!
 I checked and found that the 'completion' variables were set in a way that 
gave me the C-c b behavior that i did not like/want.

I have now added this to my org init file:
> (setq org-completion-use-iswitchb t)
> (setq org-completion-use-ido nil)
