You cannot reproduce the problem? If I were actually getting spaces, and not 
"\emsp", as the content of my table, that would be best. 

Org-mode version 8.2.7c (8.2.7c-51-g896fa6-elpa)
GNU Emacs 24.3.1 (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.10.9) of 2014-08-18 
on buildvm-21.phx2.fedoraproject.org
