Symptoms:

When starting emacs --no-init and turning on Options -> Syntax Highlighting I 
get

font-lock-default-function: Symbol's function definition is void: 
font-lock-mode-internal

Same thing for the .emacs entry:

'(global-font-lock-mode t nil (font-core))
