True - of course you could just put
#ifdef HAVE_GTK
# include <gtkversion.h>
# if (GTK_MAJOR_VERSION > 2 || (GTK_MAJOR_VERSION == 2 && GTK_MINOR_VERSION

# define HAVE_GTK_2_2
# endif
#endif
in some header for the same effect without having to touch the
configure script at all.
