I also agree.

This change seems to have more negative effects than positive ones, and
has caused a great deal of confusion (and it's rather kludgey to boot).

I seem to recall that the last time we discussed this issue, there was
at least a vague consensus that it should be reversed*, but nothing was
ever done.
