Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

M-x shell now highlights confusingly.  E.g.:

All occurrences of " -" are colored red while typing in
the same line but the color is removed when return is pressed.

All words are pale when a colon is somewhere.

Sometimes even the font changes to italics and sometimes to a variable
spaced font (in shell mode?).  Seems to be triggered by single quotes
(I believe).

I have not found a way to turn this off. Nor a description of this in
NEWS.

Also 21.3 had some highlighting, but it was rather intuitive.
(eg. for the prompt)
