I meant the point about it being impenetrable. Emacs maintainers (?)
apparently can't follow it, and it defeats features and conventions
meant to help with the sort of things involved. (This isn't news.)

Not exactly. It's a trivial experiment to verify, for instance, that
`c-mode' _does_ use CL functions; I just hadn't cared to.
