I don't really know. I'm stumped a bit myself, since at least the
DOS terminal uses the same hardware and the same basic colors as the
GNU/Linux console.

I think it could be the background: the DOS color setup uses
lightgray as the background, whereas xterm has a brighter, closer to
white background.
As for yellow vs green--I don't think it's darker, but I don't have a
good quantitative way to measure that. Do you have any suggestions
how to do that?
