    I agree that these measures do not fix the original problem -- but IMO
    they make sense as general way to prevent hangs in "odd cases".

I agree with that, but the original problem should still be fixed.

    A possible fix (for GTK) could be to work on a separate data structure
    and move it into place when it is ready (as an atomic operation); then
    the BLOCK_INPUT is not needed.  

I think we should make that change, but not limited to GTK.  The code
will be simpler if it works in the new way for all versions, and there
is no reason not to.

Could someone step forward to make this change?
