marked files and ediff default files

If I have a single directory and I mark 2 files and type M-x ediff,
then ediff will default file A to the first marked file and file B to
the second marked file.  This is works and is very convenient.

However, if I have inserted subdirectories and mark two files that
are not in the same directory ediff only provides the correct default
for the first marked file.  Shouldn't it use the marked files as
default the same as if the marked files were in same directory?  It
really would be nice if it would do so in this case as well.
