With this result in mind, starting from the default.
'(modeline ((t (:background "black" :inverse-video nil))) t)
The initial state, as far as I can see, is foreground black,
background grey75, and no inverse video. The change you're
suggesting would make it black-on-black, which makes no sense.
I am sure it makes sense for you, which implies that something else is
also different. Can you please send the complete recipe starting
with running Emacs with an empty .emacs file?
