Unibyte-mode is almost never the right solution, it's always going to
be at best an emergency kludge. So such relatively minor problems
with unibyte mode are not worth a lot of effort of fix, and I think it
would be much better to spend the time fixing the problematic package.
Have you tried a recent version of VM? My memory (from reading the VM
mailing list ~4 years ago) is that while the VM maintainer was a
staunchly in the xemacs camp, he was slowly coming around to admit
that newer versions of GNU Emacs were OK too, and I think he had even
started officially supporting it.
