Not the right answer yet: I've installed and launched the new GNU Emacs. Before applying the patch I removed printing.elc and then byte-compiled printing.el: no warning! Except 'functions are not known to be defined.' That's probably exactly the same that you saw!
Could be my old code made this extra warning appear, could be during 'make bootstrap' there is something different. One of these days I'll do a 'cvs up' again, followed by 'make bootstrap.' If I'll see the same warning, I'll apply the patch and repeat 'make bootstrap.' This will hopefully deliver the desired answer!
