I'm using GNOME 2.13.4.  It was OK with whatever version I was using previously - probably 2.12.

What version are you using?

I'll try using a different theme and see if that makes any difference.

I don't know either.  Have you tried a different theme in GNOME?  It might
be some interaction with the default background and the theme you are using.
I'm just guessing, I can't reproduce it with the GNOME I have and the themes
there.
