face cache referred to but not explained

The Elisp manual describes function `clear-face-cache' this way:

"This function clears the face cache for all frames. If UNLOAD-P
is non-`nil', that means to unload all unused fonts as well."

The doc simply repeats the function name, without adding anything useful.

I cannot find anything that says what the face cache is or what it is
used for, so the doc for this function is useless to me. I have no
idea why someone might "clear the face cache" or even what that means.

If you attempt to describe a function `empty-the-foo', it behooves you
to describe the foo as well. See, for instance, the treatment of the
image cache for what needs to be done here.
