This branch doesn't handle multibyte characters well on
display. If you want to use Xft with Emacs, please try the
latest emacs-unicode-2 branch. Run configure script with
"--enable-font-backend", and start Emacs with the same arg.
Then, it tries to use FreeType fonts via Xft as well as X
core fonts.
