2d modeline/buttons; modeline gets overwritten |

Please write in English if possible, because the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators to read other languages for them.
Your bug report will be posted to the address@hidden
mailing list.
Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
This is a display bug. I configured as indicated below, notably
using gtk and xft for anti-aliased fonts. The fonts are beautiful,
and I have nice gtk menus and scrollbars, but the modeline is
completely flat and 2d, unlike what I see in the gtk version that
Ubuntu installs (which is not compiled with xft). The buttons in the
Emacs configuration windows are also 2d. Much worse, however, is the
fact that, when I am editing a LaTeX document, the modeline gets
overwritten as I scroll down in a buffer, both by line and by
screen. This seems to be cause by lines that contain fonts that vary
in size from the default, e.g., subscripts and section headings.
This problem does not arise when I'm editing a straight text file and
all fonts are the same size. Perhaps relevant is the fact that I
compiled the emacs-unicode-2 cvs version with gtk and xft and, while
it was a bit too unstable to use with confidence, the modeline and
buttons were 3d and the modeline did not get overwritten while
editing LaTeX documents.
Comparing ldd output for my self-compiled version and the installed
Ubuntu version shows very few differences:

Other than the use of libXft, the only difference I see is that the
Ubuntu version uses libasound and and libncurses, neither of which
seems at all relevant.
Any help appreciated! (NOTE: I'm sending this via my OS X mailer, as
I do not have Ubuntu -- which is running in a Parallels VM --
configured to send mail.)
If emacs crashed, and you have the emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
`bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
If you would like to further debug the crash, please read the file
/opt/emacs/etc/DEBUG for instructions.
