I wonder if this has something to do with the mime codes? I do not know anything about it, but could it be that the web server changes something in the output?

Web servers don't change anything (at least, no web server I've ever seen does, and I've worked with most of them).

I don't know what happened in Drew's case, but I don't think this a real life problem that is worth making the code less readable over.
