As you mentioned, this added some complexity, but I think the key is
that, in the end (refactoring of _execute_command aside), it just adds
that extra optional kwarg, 'skip_executed', to _execute_command.

I'll push a change to my repo soon which makes the use of that kwarg
in invoke(), explicit -- explicit is better than implicit, especially
in hard-to-follow stuff like these core mechanics of command execution
:)
