libgd is meant to be compiled with freetype 1.x, not freetype 2.

There were enough changes in freetype 2 that applications/libraries that are
compilable with freetype 1.x will not compile with freetype 2.  You will need to
contact the author(s) of libgd and ask them to support freetype 2.  The authors
of the GD and GD::Text perl modules also need to be contacted about using
freetype 2, if they aren't already adding support for freetype 2.
