Hi!

I recently upgraded to 1600x1200 from 1280x1024... and found that the
size of fonts in apps using freetype/xft2 became larger!(no changes in
old-style fonts)

You can see what I'm talking about in this screenshot..

http://kingsly.net/mf-fonts.png

The Firebird window with the smaller fonts was launched at 1280x1024 and the
one with larger fonts was launched at 1600x1200.

I figured it is an issue with freetype because an xterm with an oldstyle font
launched at both resolutions has the same size(in pixels)... but if I launch
the xterm with a freetype(-fa) font the size of the xterm varies in the same
fashion as the Firebird screenshot above.

For now I've overcome this by hardcoding a smaller font in my gtkrc. (but
this has the side effect that when I switch to a lower resolution... the
fonts become really tiny!)

My question is.. how do I ensure that the fonts maintain either

1) Fixed Size(smaller fonts at larger resolutions)
or
2) the right ratio(same size fonts irrespective of resolution)

(larger fonts at higher resolutions kind of beats the whole purpose of my
moving to larger display as the fonts are hogging precious real-estate!)

I'm using...

XFree86-4.3.0-42.rh8.0
freetype-2.1.4-5
fontconfig-2.2.1-6.1
