Dear Mr. Charette,
first of all, i want to thank you for your Polyglossia package. I just
discovered it as i wanted to write a text in Fraktur (this a special
german kind of blackletter typeface) using XeTeX.
For this, i wanted to use the babelshorthands to get more control of
hyphenation. They are needed because in the german language, one may
have curious words like
»Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz«¹,
which is a »common« word in german and »an example of the virtually
unlimited compounding of nouns that is possible in many Germanic
languages.«¹, so that a command like "= (which adds a new parting
point without destroying other) is really useful. Furthermore, this is
a clean way to break wrong ligatures.
Now to my problem: I'm using MikTeX with Polyglossia 1.0.2 and i was
already able to get the babelshorthands more or less working by
correcting
\XeTeXinterchartoks 7 28 = {„}%
\XeTeXinterchartoks 7 29 = {“}%
\XeTeXinterchartoks 7 30 = {«}%
\XeTeXinterchartoks 7 31 = {»}%
in the file »gloss-german.ldf« (without the Breakets, the option
wasn't working for me). But unfortunately the, \= command still
doesn't seems to work; typing »Auf"=lage« produces the curious output
»Auf"-=lage« (and not the expected »Auflage« without a »fl« ligature).
I created a minimal example of my problem which can be found in the
appendix of this e-mail.
Did i something wrong or is this not yet working in Polyglossia?
With best regards from germany,
Dennis Heidsiek

Lieber Herr Heidsiek,
Beim heutigen "Frühjahrsputz" meiner Emailordner stellte sich heraus,
dass ich Ihre Anfrage vom 10. Februar möglicherweise nie beantwortet
habe!
