[Fsuk-manchester] FOSS Branding

Innsbruck University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MIT
are studying open source brands. They are now surveying attitudes etc.
Take part, if you like. The Apache question set is at
http://surveys.hyvelive.de/10_apache/p1.php?refGroup=ache Took me
around 5 minutes.

Branding is an interesting question WRT Free Software, and one of the
dividing lines between the Open Source end of the FOSS (such as
Apache) and the FSF. The Apache License is a Free Software license but
these licenses deal only with copyright, not trademark or branding.
Towards the Free Software end of the spectrum, some people like to
think about an absolute right to fork - including trademark and
branding. Think as well about the root of the Apache-Sun conflict over
Java, and perhaps you'll agree that Sun were foolish to include
branding within the bundle of rights assigned when FOSS passes a TCK.
