One immediate thing you can do is (setq si::*optimize-maximum-pages*
nil). This will result in quite a bit more gc time, but will keep the
heap size to an absolute minimum. A less draconian measure is to
preallocate more cons pages before the run to prevent the memory
balancing algorithm from placing the pages elsewhere, but I'd try the
former first.

FYI, we just completed successful tests of a gcl with a 2 word cons,
giving 50% more cons space in the same heap, together with a heap
start lowering algorithm giving 1/8 more heap on Linux, together with
an immediate fixnum table covering 1/4 the range accelerating
undeclared fixnum arithmetic by a factor of 2.8. It will still be a
while before this reaches a stable release. One item which will
likely be obsolete is the larger fixnum table you use, which also will
free up some space.

You know about (room), right?

Take care,
