Here is a patent problem,

Apple has patent on some bytecode in TrueType font that store metainformation 
to increase render quality at low size. Microsoft pays royalties to apple so 
that Windows XP has the same render quality that OS X. So, in US, free 
software will NEVER legally have the same rendering quality that commercial 
OS. Although the code exists in freetype, and is legal to use in europe, it 
is a compilation flag., so all US based free software will have a bad 
rendering quality.

IMHO it is sad and it shows that the patent problem already exists.

So, this is a good example of bad consequence of software patent.
