Well, I don't know the exact details of the thing, but it's used for
pathfinding.
A gradient is well, a gradient :) a grid, with a piece of the map in it, each
piece gets a value from 0(accessible) to 255(not accessible) a globule will
always try to move towards the lowest possible value square.
that's also how guard areas and forbidden areas work.
basically
this is overly simplified, but I must say I'm still figuring out exactly how
it works.
