I did try another optimisation and here are the results: (All this has been
compiled with "-march=pentium3 -O3")
-On a 128x128 active map, runing for 60s, I got a cpu median use going down from
30% to 23%, that is a +30% relative speed improvement. (see the plot at the end
of the e-mail)
-On a 256x256 not really active map, runing for 185s, I got a cpu median use
staying at 30%. The average time is about 2% faster anyway, that is a +6%
relative speed improvement.

Can you notice any change ?
