GNU Radio (software-defined radio -- signal processing code) has been
evolving its sound support too. At the moment it has support for
four:

    gr-audio-alsa-0.5.tar.gz
    gr-audio-jack-0.3.tar.gz
    gr-audio-oss-0.9.tar.gz
    gr-audio-portaudio-0.2.tar.gz

Portaudio is the up-and-coming one for GNU Radio -- not working
perfectly yet on most platforms, but limping on Windows, MacOS, Linux,
Unix, and showing a lot of promise.

(Of course, these are raw audio back ends, without codecs and such.
But it's indicative that even for raw audio samples, none of the
libraries is in good enough shape for high-function and portable code
to just use it and not worry.)

For general GNU Radio info, or to get this code, see
