It's called the MIT shared memory extension and is used by mplayer and
others, avoiding having to put large quantities of data through the
Xlib IPC mechanism.
There is also "X Video" estension, but that seems more to do with
having video camera input pumped directly in a window without X server
intervention and scaling of video in hardware.
