So here's what I hope constitutes a "complete" version of the macro. The 
directory searches have been added back in, as well as the AC_CHECK_HEADERS/LIB.

I've tested it with my setup and it works fine, and I'll try messing with my 
setup a bit and see if it still works (or fails correctly) but it really really 
should be checked and tested by other people before anything is done with it!
