Couldn't we write a .swf file which knows how to play a .flv file, and when we're handed a .flv file, run the .swf file, giving it the path to the .flv file?
I use the jw flvplayer to do this. It's a GPL'd swf based media player for web pages, but runs fine in Gnash standalone.
