I talked to Rodrigo while at LibrePlanet this last weekend. We know
each other from spending weeks together in a rental car driving around
the Balkans last Sept. :-) I've actually been working with interns all
year. Right now I've got 3 CS seniors from the university of Colorado,
and one local high-school, so I'm a bit loaded as it is. Course nobody
is expected to produce much code, the focus is on education through real
world examples. So while GSoC is a nice program, any mentoring would
have to be done by somebody else this time. As I have the contacts, I'd
be willing to make a late push if somebody would want to mentor. Btw,
for GNU projects, the money the maintainer gets mostly goes to the
FSF... so this is a volunteer gig.
