 The oldest Americans are also the happiest, research finds=20
 By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer
 It turns out the golden years really are golden.
 Eye-opening new research finds the happiest Americans are the oldest,=20
 and older adults are more socially active than the stereotype of the=20
 lonely senior suggests. The two go hand-in-hand: Being social can help=20
 keep away the blues.
 "The good news is that with age comes happiness," said study author=20
 Yang Yang, a University of Chicago sociologist. "Life gets better in=20
 one's perception as one ages."
 A certain amount of distress in old age is inevitable, including aches=20
 and pains and the deaths of loved ones and friends. But older people=20
 generally have learned to be more content with what they have than=20
 younger adults, Yang said.
 This is partly because older people have learned to lower their=20
 expectations and accept their achievements, said Duke University aging=20
 expert Linda George. An older person may realize "it's fine that I was=20
 a schoolteacher and not a Nobel prize winner."
 George, who was not involved in the new study, believes the research is=20
 important because people tend to think that "late life is far from the=20
 best stage of life, and they don't look forward to it."
 Yang's findings are based on periodic face-to-face interviews with a=20
 nationally representative sample of Americans from 1972 to 2004.=20
 About 28,000 people ages 18 to 88 took part.
 There were ups and downs in overall happiness levels during the study,=20
 generally corresponding with good and bad economic times. But at every stag=
 e,=20
 older Americans were the happiest.
 While younger blacks and poor people tended to be less happy than whites an=
 d=20
 wealthier people, those differences faded as people aged.
 In general, the odds of being happy increased 5 percent with every 10 years=
  of age.
 Overall, about 33 percent of Americans reported being very happy at age 88,=
 =20
 versus about 24 percent of those age 18 to their early 20s. And throughout=
 =20
 the study years, most Americans reported being very happy or pretty happy.=
 =20
 Less than 20 percent said they were not too happy.
 A separate University of Chicago study found that about 75 percent of peopl=
 e=20
 aged 57 to 85 engage in one or more social activities at least every week.=
 =20
 Those include socializing with neighbors, attending religious services,=20
 volunteering or going to group meetings.
 Those in their 80s were twice as likely as those in their 50s to do at=20
 least one of these activities.
 Both studies appear in April's American Sociological Review.
 "People's social circles do tend to shrink a little as they age =E2=80=94 t=
 hat is=20
 mainly where that stereotype comes from, but that image of the isolated=20
 elderly really falls apart when we broaden our definition of what social=
 =20
 connection is," said study co-author Benjamin Cornwell, also a University=
 =20
 of Chicago researcher.
 The research rings true for 81-year-old George O'Hare, a retired Sears=20
 manager in Willowbrook, Ill. He's active with church and AARP and does=20
 motivational speaking, too. His wife is still living, and he's close=20
 to his three sons and four grandchildren.
 "I'm very happy because I've made friends that are still living," O'Hare sa=
 id.=20
 "I like to go out and speak in schools about motivation."
 "Happiness is getting out and being with people, and that's why I recommend=
  it,"=20
 he said.=20
 Ilse Siegler, an 84-year-old retired nurse manager in Chicago, has a slight=
 ly=20
 different perspective. Her husband died 35 years ago, and she says she stil=
 l=20
 misses him every day.=20
 She has vision problems and has slowed down with age. Yet she still swims,=
 =20
 runs a social group in her condo building, volunteers in a retirement home=
 =20
 and is active with her temple. These all help "make life more enjoyable," s=
 he said.=20
 While Siegler said these aren't the happiest years of her life, she's conte=
 nt.=20
 "Contentment as far as I'm concerned comes with old age ... because you acc=
 ept=20
 things the way they are," she said. "You know that nothing is perfect."=20
 Cornwell's nationally representative study was based on in-home interviews=
 =20
 with 3,005 people in 2005 and 2006. While it didn't include nursing home=
 =20
 residents, only about 4 percent of Americans aged 75 to 84 are in nursing h=
 omes,=20
 Cornwell said.=20
 It's all good news for the aging population. However, Yang's study also fou=
 nd=20
 that baby boomers were the least happy. They could end up living the unfort=
 unate=20
 old-age stereotype if they can't let go of their achievement-driven mind-se=
 t,=20
 said George, the Duke aging expert.=20
 So far, baby boomers aren't lowering their aspirations at the same rate ear=
 lier=20
 generations did. "They still seem to believe that they should have it all,"=
 =20
 George said. "They're still thinking about having a retirement that's going=
 =20
 to let them do everything they haven't done yet."=20
 Previous research also has shown that mid-life tends to be the most stressf=
 ul=20
 time, said Cornell University sociologist Elaine Wethington. "Everyone's=
 =20
 asking you to do things and you have a lot to do. You're less happy because=
 =20
 you feel hassled."=20
 The new studies show "if you can make it through that," there's light at=
 =20
 the end of the tunnel, Wethington said.=20
 _Treatment._--Pain is relieved by full doses of opium or codein, and
 these drugs are specially indicated when sugar is present in the urine.
 Vaccines may be given a trial. The diet should be liberal and easily
 digested, and strychnin and other stimulants may be of service. Locally
 the treatment is carried out on the same lines as for boils.

 In some cases it is advisable to excise the carbuncle or to make
 incisions across it in different directions, so that the resulting wound
 presents a stellate appearance.

 #Acute Abscesses of the Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue in Young
 Children.#--In young infants, abscesses are not infrequently met with
 scattered over the trunk and limbs, and are probably the result of
 infection of the sebaceous glands from dirty underclothing. The
 abscesses should be opened, and the further spread of infection
 prevented by cleansing of the skin and by the use of clean under-linen.
 Similar abscesses are met with on the scalp in association with eczema,
 impetigo, and pediculosis.

 #Veldt Sore.#--This sore usually originates in an abrasion of the
 epidermis, such as a sun blister, the bite of an insect, or a scratch. A
 pustule forms and bursts, and a brownish-yellow scab forms over it. When
 this is removed, an ulcer is left which has little tendency to heal.
 These sores are most common about the hands, arms, neck, and feet, and
 are most apt to occur in those who have had no opportunities of washing,
 and who have lived for a long time on tinned foods.

 #Tuberculosis of the Skin.#--Interest attaches chiefly to the primary
 forms of tuberculosis of the skin in which the bacilli penetrate from
 without--inoculation tubercle and lupus.

 #Inoculation Tubercle.#--The appearances vary with the conditions under
 which the inoculation takes place. As observed on the fingers of adults,
 the affection takes the form of an indolent painless swelling, the
 epidermis being red and glazed, or warty, and irregularly fissured.
 Sometimes the epidermis gives way, forming an ulcer with flabby
 granulations. The infection rarely spreads to the lymphatics, but we
 have seen inoculation tubercle of the index-finger followed by a large
 cold abscess on the median side of the upper arm and by a huge mass of
 breaking down glands in the axilla.

 In children who run about barefooted in towns, tubercle may be
 inoculated into wounds in the sole or about the toes, and although the
 local appearances may not be characteristic, the nature of the infection
 is revealed by its tendency to spread up the limb along the lymph
 vessels, giving rise to abscesses and fungating ulcers in relation to
 the femoral glands.

 #Tuberculous Lupus.#--This is an extremely chronic affection of the
 skin. It rarely extends to the lymph glands, and of all tuberculous
 lesions is the least dangerous to life. The commonest form of
 lupus--_lupus vulgaris_--usually commences in childhood or youth, and is
 most often met with on the nose or cheek. The early and typical
 appearance is that of brownish-yellow or pink nodules in the skin, about
 the size of hemp seed. Healing frequently occurs in the centre of the
 affected area while the disease continues to extend at the margin.

 When there is actual destruction of tissue and ulceration--the so-called
 "_lupus excedens_" or "_ulcerans_"--healing is attended with
 cicatricial contraction, which may cause unsightly deformity. When the
 cheek is affected, the lower eyelid may be drawn down and everted; when
 the lips are affected, the mouth may be distorted or seriously
 diminished in size. When the nose is attacked, both the skin and mucous
 surfaces are usually involved, and the nasal orifices may be narrowed or
 even obliterated; sometimes the soft parts, including the cartilages,
 are destroyed, leaving only the bones covered by tightly stretched scar
 tissue.
