I fear that forums may divide the community up too soon.  Is it possible
to do something like gmane.org and link it to the mailing list, but
categorise it?

gmane sounds good - anyone have experiance with setting it up?
As MJ has pointed out, dividing up the community is bad, which is 
why we currently only have one mailing list and one IRC channel.
We'll create more as needed.

Paul and I also made a decision some time ago that we wouldn't have forums,
as we consider mailing lists better. Having to go to N forums to help people with
various project doesn't scale, but having it all land in my inbox does.
