hummm, a don't know about this error, but as a can see in your mail,
you've used the -fPIC as suggested by gcc on the 'final' link.
May be you can try to use this option for the .png -> .o 
build.

(and i think that wrapping to 80 chars is correct but i don't know the
english hyphenation rules)
