To avoid seeing Google ads (including Gmail ads), you could use the
CustomizeGoogle Firefox extension[1]. CustomizeGoogle can also
anonymize the Google cookie GUID[2].

If you want email encryption with Gmail's web interface, you can use
FireGPG[3]. But the person on the receiving end of the email needs to
have some kind of PGP/GPG software to be able to decrypt your message.
