User-agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) H3 (4.1.4) / FreeBSD-6.2

Have you checked the box "desktop-environment" (or something like that) during installation? If not, you won't have any graphical interface by default.

If you don't want to reinstall (to check this box), you may have to install xorg and your favorite desktop manager (gnome, KDE, or whatever you want). To start a graphical interface, you will have to login in console and then start xorg. Just do:

 startx

will make it.

Hope this helps.

As part of my New Year's resolution to go open source

Welcome to the community. gNewSense is about free software, not open
source. The two are very different and there's a good read at [1] to
help understand the different approach, philosophy, and values between
the two.

Any comments or thoughts would be most appreciated!

It's helpful to report error messages that you may see as well as any
other sights, sounds, or smells. As such, it would be helpful if you
could send your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log to
http://gnewsense.pastebin.com so that it can be reviewed by others in
the community.
