personally i like the auto-detect version better.. also shouldn't it
do this for all transports?  or does webdav not support umask/chmod etc?

Doubtless some other transports support umask.  sftp is the one I'm
committed to right now, and the one which would benefit me the most if
support was coded right away.

What did you have in mind for doing auto-detect?  Taking a full listing
of the main archive directory and guessing from that?  Be nice to just
explicitly tell it what to do.  Easier to code, more predictable to use.
Maybe do autodetect if a umask hadn't been explicitly set?
