no, im convinced the whole =meta-info idea is a horrible kludge.

the stat method is the way to go.  (from the sftp.h file there is a
stat command in sftp, and there has to be since sftp(1) supports -P
which preserves full permissions and timestamps both ways).

webdav is another question, but this whole thing may not be relevant
to webdav anyway since as i understand it most webdav setups just end
up giving everyone uid=www-data and the httpd does its own access
control.  i could be wrong on that.
