_Won't_ happen for different reasons, but prohibition against
cross-directory hard links doesn't imply a need for in-tree
pristines.  Why would it?

(The other more common restriction, against cross _device_ hard-links
can be handled with multiple greedy libraries on your path (at least
one on each device of interest), of course.)
