I *think* I can see what you're getting at here. Please tell me if I'm
right.

As I understand it, you want the marked-up merged document to be viewed
in something like Mozilla, where the DOM tree is available for
inspection, presumably with something very much like a XSLT template
describing how the document is to be rendered into a format that the
tool (say, Mozilla) can actually display.

Mozilla in particular already has the ability to put a little flashing
box around everything rendered based on a subtree component, and writing
an actual merge tool for DOM tree elements based on it certainly strikes
me as a not-entirely-unreasonable problem.

An that point, the sticking point is simply having XSLT templates to
describe how to display the marked-up document format for every variety
of document the user is likely to want to merge (some of which,
presumably, are not likely to be trivially transformed into a readable
HTML representation).

Am I right?
