This one is a problem I regularly have to face with IRC. The solution
is simple:

Make up any old name that you like.

If you later discover that this name is a collision, make up a second
name and provide that as well.

This approach wins out of sheer simplicity. It's "good enough"; these
'features' are only really hints in the first place.

[On general principle these things can never be destructive problems -
there will never be interface changes which could cause the
incompatible client to behave destructively. So it's just a regular
bug when it goes wrong and can be fixed in the same manner].
